Liberal Omar Alghabra Calls for Special Review of Isotope Fiasco

OTTAWA - Liberal Natural Resources Critic Omar Alghabra has written to Auditor General Sheila Fraser asking for an immediate review of the situation that has occurred around the Chalk River nuclear facility.

"On behalf of all Canadians, I am respectfully requesting that you immediately conduct a special examination and performance review of that facility and provide us with your findings, observations and recommendations," Mr. Alghabra wrote today.

Mr. Alghabra said he believes a special audit needs to take place to examine not only how the recent isotope crisis happened but also why the Chalk River reactor was allegedly operating in violation of a license. He also wants Ms. Fraser to include in her audit an examination of the apparent unhealthy tension between the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) as the regulator and AECL as the operator.

"The public can benefit tremendously from your observations and suggestions. It is crucial to learn from the past so Canadians can be better prepared for the future," he wrote.
