House of
Commons Agrees: Conservatives are Failing Immigrants
Ottawa – Last night, the House of Commons passed a
motion confirming that immigrants to Canada and
persons seeking Canadian citizenship are poorly
served by the Conservative government. The motion
was brought forward by Liberal Citizenship and
Immigration critic, Omar Alghabra.
“Immigration matters of integration, employment and
social justice are critical challenges that require
a focused government,” said Alghabra. “This
Conservative government has shown that they have no
plan and no vision to confront those challenges,” he
continued.
Statistics Canada research predicts that between
2011 and 2015, 100% of our net labour force and
population growth will come solely from immigration.
In order to harness this growth in the labour force,
Canada must help immigrants and new Canadians reach
their optimum potential by ensuring that they can
overcome the difficulties they face when integrating
into the workforce and society. The Liberal Party of
Canada remains committed to ensuring that this
vision becomes a reality.
Yesterday, the House of Commons loudly expressed
their dissatisfaction with this Conservative
government when it comes to dealing with the
immigration file. The motion passed by a margin of
159 to 123.
