Alghabra commemorates
UTM’s 40th Anniversary in House of Commons
OTTAWA - Today, Omar
Alghabra, Member of Parliament for
Mississauga-Erindale, made a statement in the
House of Commons commemorating the University of
Toronto’s Mississauga (UTM) Campus’ 40th
Anniversary. He applauded the administration,
faculty members, students and local community
partners on the campus’ great accomplishments
during such a short period of time. Alghabra has
routinely met with administration and students
listening to their needs, many of which have
been ignored by the current Conservative
government. He strongly urged the current
government to take a greater leadership role in
supporting post-secondary education.
Please find a copy of
Alghabra’s statement below:
Mr. Speaker, I have the
honour of representing the riding of
Mississauga—Erindale, the host for one of the
fastest growing and most dynamic university
campuses in Canada.
This year, the University
of Toronto Mississauga celebrated its 40th
anniversary. Thanks to its administration,
faculty members, students and local community
partners, this campus has accomplished a great
deal in a short period of time.
Since I was elected, I
have been in constant contact with the
administration and students, listening to their
concerns and aspirations. There is huge
disappointment with the Conservatives and their
inaction in providing a leadership on
post-secondary education.
Canadians expect their
government to invest in their most important
assets: human resources. The Conservatives
consistently pass over the needs of students and
their families while failing to outline a vision
and an action plan to help them deal with
post-secondary education accessibility and
mounting debts.
I urge the Prime Minister
to demonstrate genuine interest by responding to
their needs, which are crucial to the future
success of our country.
