Alghabra appointed key role: Official Opposition Critic for
Natural Resources

OTTAWA - Today, the Hon. Stéphane Dion, Leader of the Official Opposition, announced the appointment of Omar Alghabra, Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Erindale, as Official Opposition Critic for Natural Resources. The announcement also outlined a new structure for Mr. Dion’s shadow cabinet. This shuffle is intended to optimize the utilization of the talent and skills the Liberal benches have and to ensure that the views of Canadians are represented effectively.

"I am delighted and honoured by this appointment and I look forward to working constructively with all of my colleagues for the ultimate benefit of our country," said Alghabra. "The natural resources file is vital to the way we currently live our lives as well as our future and I intend on approaching it in a creative and responsible way."

A united and invigorated Liberal team is committed to putting forth an ambitious and responsible vision for Canada. This new structure will play an integral function in advocating for progressive policies that better serve the needs of our society.

"I am extremely proud of my team. Our work in the last session ensured the Parliament could address issues of importance to all Canadians, and forced Prime Stephen Minister Harper to acknowledge the major failings of his government," said Mr. Dion.

"This is a huge assignment as it encompasses three major files that Canada is grappling with: the Environment, Energy and the Economy," said Alghabra. "I feel that I have played a positive role in shaping citizenship and immigration policies when I was the critic for that file.  I am looking forward to playing an equally effective and positive role in contributing to the debate and discussions on the natural resources file".
